After installing Lotus Sametime on IBM i a few weeks ago, I remembered a conversation with an IT Director I spoke with back in 2009. This person had flat out refused to install Sametime (although he was entitled to it with their Lotus licensing) because he thought that any form of instant messaging (which could interrupt him, not unlike a phone) was too intrusive for the entire company based on his opinion. No other reason and no further discussion.
In the age of Social Business where terms like collaboration, community and sharing are staples...that type of reasoning was incredibly selfish.
You remember doing IM on ICQ back in like 1995? I do. That's 16 years ago. If you're an IT Director, CIO or anyone in a position of influence on technology in your company and you're weighing Sametime or any other IM product then do yourself a favor: talk to your kids about how chat is a part of their lives.
Maybe you'll get something far more important out of what they tell you than what you'll get from anyone else.
